Who knows how to turn stats into meaning like nobody’s business? Hans Rosling, the new inductee into the Time Magazine 100 Most Influential People in 2012.
Hans Rosling is a statistician who has become well known for visualizing statistical information. His presentation on socioeconomics in a TED talk from 2006 utilizes meaningful visuals to explain complex information. More of Hans videos on visualizing statistics can be found here. One of our favorites, “200 Countries, 200 Years, 4 Minutes – The Joy of Stats,” is posted below.
Using visuals to tell compelling stories about social issues is something we at FrameWorks encourage and train our advocates on. We call this social math, which refers to making large numbers comprehensible and compelling by placing them in a social context that provides meaning. Typically, this means creating a relationship between a number that is hard to imagine and something known. To read more about social math, click here.
